Many young people leave home without knowing how to make a simple meal. In my view, cooking should be part of every school timetable, although schools need to plan the time for it carefully. The main reason is health. Students who can cook depend less on ready meals, which are often high in salt and sugar. A good example of this is a basic vegetable soup, which is cheap, quick and healthier than most snacks. This means that a few lessons could change eating habits for life. It could be argued that the school day is already full. While it is true that timetables are busy, cooking does not have to replace other subjects. It could be taught for one term, alongside topics such as healthy eating. As a result, students would gain a practical skill without losing time for exams. Another point is that cooking builds confidence. Making a meal for others gives young people something to be proud of. As far as I am concerned, cooking lessons are worth the effort. On balance, I am convinced that every school should offer them, if they are organised sensibly.
The writer's opinion is clear in the first paragraph.

Homework is one of the most common complaints among students, but should it disappear completely? It seems to me that a small amount is useful, as long as teachers plan it with care. The main argument for homework is that it gives students a chance to practise what they have learnt in class. A good example of this is learning vocabulary: words that are reviewed at home the same evening are often easier to remember. This means that lessons can move forward more quickly. While it is true that students need time for sport, music and friends, homework does not have to take up whole evenings. Twenty or thirty minutes is usually enough, and it leaves plenty of time for other activities. Another point is that homework teaches students to organise their own time. This leads to habits that are useful at university and at work. On balance, I am convinced that homework should stay, but teachers should keep it short and make it relevant to the lesson.
