Exactly which cookies and browser storage Teach Study English uses, what each one is for, and how to control them.
Cookies are small text files a website saves in your browser. Local storage is a similar space in your browser where a site can keep information on your device. The rules on cookies (in the EU, the ePrivacy Directive) apply to both. They can be "strictly necessary" (needed for something you asked for, like staying signed in) or used for other purposes like analytics or advertising, which need your consent. We only use the first kind.
These items stay on your device. Only the guest ID is sent to us, and only with something you choose to save (see the privacy policy).
| Name | What it's for | How long |
|---|---|---|
tse_anon_id | A random guest ID, so favourites, ratings and scores you save without an account are yours (and move into your account if you create one). | Until you clear it |
tse:answers:… | Your answers and checks in a lesson's online exercises, so you can continue later. | Until you reset the lesson or clear it |
tse:writing:… | Drafts of writing tasks, so you don't lose your work. | Until you clear it |
tse:stepup:… | Your best result in the Step Up game for each lesson. | Until you clear it |
tse:pairup:… | Your best time in the Pair Up game for each lesson. | Until you clear it |
tse:snap:… | Your best scores in the Snap game for each lesson. | Until you clear it |
tse:retro:… | Your high score in each Retro arcade game (Word Invaders, Word Snake, Word Maze, Word Crossing) for each lesson. | Until you clear it |
tse:rated:… | That you've rated a resource, so we don't ask twice. | Until you clear it |
tse:catalogue-view | Whether you prefer the card or list view in the catalogues. | Until you clear it |
tse:tool-display | Your display choice in the classroom tools. | Until you clear it |
You can clear lesson answers and game results in Settings → This device, or everything through your browser's settings.
Video lesson pages embed YouTube videos in privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com), and video thumbnails in the catalogues load from YouTube's image servers. Loading them sends your IP address to Google. YouTube says it doesn't use cookies to personalise ads in this mode, but once you press play it may store information in your browser, for example to remember your player settings and to measure views. Google is responsible for this; see Google's privacy policy.
If you choose to sign in with Google, that happens on Google's own pages, where Google's cookies apply.
Checkout and billing pages are run by Stripe, which uses cookies to process payments securely and prevent fraud. See Stripe's cookie information.
You can block or delete cookies and site data in your browser's settings. If you block the sign-in cookies you won't be able to log in or download PDFs, but every lesson page, online exercise and game still works without an account. Clearing site data also removes your saved answers and game results on that device.
If we ever add cookies that aren't strictly necessary, such as analytics, we'll update this policy first and ask for your consent before setting them. Questions: hello@teachstudyenglish.com.
