Three years ago, I could hardly run for a bus. I was working long hours, eating badly and getting most of my exercise by walking to the car. [1] So when my sister, Nadia, suggested that we enter a half marathon together, I laughed. She was serious, though, and in the end I agreed, mainly so that she would stop asking. Our first training session was a disaster. We set off far too fast, and after ten minutes I had to stop, out of breath and dripping with sweat. [2] Nadia, who had read several books about running, said that this was completely normal. Beginners, she explained, should mix running with walking until their bodies get used to it. We followed her plan for three months, running a little further and walking a little less whenever we could. [3] By the spring, I was running for forty minutes without a break, and I had started to enjoy it. Then, six weeks before the race, I felt a sharp pain in my ankle while running downhill. [4] The physiotherapist I saw the next day said that I had probably increased my distance too quickly and that I needed to rest for two weeks. Those two weeks were the hardest part of the whole experience. I was sure that all my training had been wasted. [5] Instead, I swam, did the stretches the physiotherapist had given me and tried to stay positive. On the day of the race, my ankle was fine. I didn't beat anybody, and Nadia finished twenty minutes ahead of me. [6] The important thing was that I crossed the finish line. Three years later, I still run three times a week, and I have never felt healthier.

The manager of the sports centre in your town wants more young people to use the centre. The manager has asked you to write a report. In your report, you should: • describe what the centre offers at the moment • explain why young people don't use it more • recommend changes that would attract them. Write your report. Word box: facilities · membership · attract · encourage · take part in
Suggested minimum: 140 words

Attracting more young people to the sports centre Introduction The aim of this report is to explain why few young people use our town's sports centre and to suggest how this could change. I spoke to twenty students at my college. Current facilities The centre has a swimming pool, a gym and two tennis courts. Most classes, such as yoga and aqua fitness, take place during the day and are aimed at older adults. Why young people stay away Most of the students I asked said that a monthly membership was too expensive for them. Several also complained that the gym closes at eight o'clock, before many of them have finished studying. In addition, the centre does not advertise online, so some students did not even know about the tennis courts. Recommendations I would recommend introducing a cheaper student membership and opening the gym until ten in the evening. It would also be a good idea to offer team sports with a coach, such as basketball, which would encourage more teenagers to take up a sport and keep fit. Finally, a short online survey would show the centre what else young people want.
