- and adds more information: I like music and I play the guitar.
- but shows a difference: I like football, but I don't like tennis.
- or gives a choice: Do you want tea or coffee?
because
- because gives a reason. It answers the question Why?
- I go for a run because I love running.
- because + a sentence: because I missed the bus (not because of I missed the bus).
so and also
- so gives a result: It was cold, so we stayed at home.
- also adds more information. It goes before the main verb: I also like cooking.
Commas
- We often put a comma before but: The park is nice, but it's very far.
Study tips
- Make your sentences longer: I like music. I play the guitar. → I like music and I play the guitar.
- Answer Why? questions with because: Why do you go to the park? Because I like the lake.

Read: Tom and Ana

Tom and Ana are friends, but they like different things. Tom loves sport. He goes for a run every morning, and on Saturdays he plays football in the park.
